I would firstly like to introduce myself
My name is Warren Allcroft PGA Professional. I have been qualified as a golf instructor for over 15 years and consider myself a very experienced golf teacher.
Over the next few weeks we are going to make YOUR golf game improve, become more enjoyable and more importantly 'get your scores lower'.
To improve fundamentals are vital.
Golf Lesson 1 - Aim and Grip | Golf Lesson 2 - Posture and Alignment
Before we hit any shots, you need to know where you intend to hit the golf ball (hopefully on target), Once we have explained the grip it is essential that you continue to practice these two steps on a regular basis as it is only too easy for simple faults to creep into your golf swing.
Initially we need to attain a target line on which we are going to aim the club head, this maybe the flag stick or the center of the fairway.
Stand a couple of yards behind the golf ball and imagine a line connecting your golf ball to your chosen target. This line is known as the ball to target line.
Now we need to aim the leading edge of the club face down the target line. I recommend picking out an object that is lying on the target line i.e. a blade of grass, daisy or even a lump of mud, normally two to three inches in front of the ball.
Now we are ready to make the grip.
The grip, like the aim needs to be correct, a bad grip can lead to bad shots.
Throughout the swing the hands need to work together even though they are placed differently on the club.
Your left hand is going to support the club whilst your right hand is going to release the club head.
Grip
Tip: - Make sure that your left thumb sits into the life line on your right hand.
Now lift the club to a horizontal position, you should be able to see two V's created on either hand between the forefinger and the thumb and they should be pointing diagonally across the grip parallel to each other ideally pointing towards your right shoulder.
The main three holds are shown below : -
Overlapping
Interlocking
Baseball
Grip Pressure
You may have the perfect grip but if your grip pressure is not correct, then you can forget good golf, ideally you want to grip the club as lightly as you can without letting go of the club. This is very important in a good grip and is often where a lot of amateurs go wrong.
Important Notes
Before we explain the next fundamentals (posture and alignment) it is essential that you spend time practicing aiming the club face at the target, as the hands are the only contact you have with the club, its extremely important that the grip is correct, practice is essential.
